I belive that 832x624 is the max resolution your monitor will support. Any resolution higher than that will result in the black screen (or sometimes a white screen)=640x480: OK 800x600: OK 832x624: OK 1024x768: black screen again.
Do you have the tab in the monitors & sound control panel set to "all" or "recommended" ? Many of the resolutions that show up under "all" are not supported.
If you need to use a resolution not listed in either of those, you can try using Madrau Software's SwitchRes, which allows you to set any resolution that your video card supports. Some resolutions may damage your monitor though, so be careful. Also, from my own experience, if there is no option between "recommended" and "all" in the monitors & sound control panel (at least this is my guess) the extensions will freeze your computer upon startup. Try it yourself though, I could have just had an extension conflict or something else.
