Finder, in the Classic Mac OS, has a number of memory issues that were never fixed. It does quite a few tasks on its own heap. And many print drivers use that same heap for background printing.
IOW, if you have a lot of disk drives or folders with a large number of files that you open, or do large print jobs, you may need to increase the Finder's memory partition.
Moreover, starting with (I believe) OS 8.6 the finder memory allocation was boosted considerably, and the memory management of Finder was changed, making this uneccessary.
This trick made a big difference in OS 8.1, increased my stability quite a bit, but was uneccessary later.
