HP says that their current ink-jet printers require built-in USB.  I think
it is actually a printer driver problem, not a printer problem (not that
that makes any real difference to me unless there is an alternative driver
somewhere...)

It is possible that USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1 is not a perfect
emulation of the OS hooks in "native" USB, so that driver writers have an
additional effort (in testing, at least) that some don't want to make.
