I just bought a Brother HL 5040 Laser printer to use on my 6400/G3400. It states it requires "a pre-installed" USB port to work. I have a Belkin USB 1.1 two port card I bought at Office Max with USB card support 1.4.1 and OS 9.0.4. It works flawlessly. This same setup works in my 7300/200 and my beige G3/233 with OS 8.6. I also got the Brother HL 1440 laser to work with no problems with the above mentioned boxes. My Epson 704i also works with this same setup on it's USB connection.

Is USB showing up under Apple System profiler?

Have you tried another USB card and/or cable?

(shrugs)

Maybe I've just been lucky, but I've never had a problem with legacy Macs and USB printers and I've configured a bunch.

PS If you're looking for an inexpensive Laser printer that rocks, check out Brother. My HL 5040 was $199.00 USD and it's fast, smooth and quiet with beautiful printing. And the disclaimer: No I don't work for Brother, or any other entity connected to it nor do I even work in the industry. I'm just a satisfied customer who can still get all his SOHO work done on legacy Macs. :>)
