Go through all the connections, taking them apart and slipping them back together several times. Oxidation on the contacts will degrade and even stop the computer modem from getting the clear signal it needs to communicate.
Did this first off. No change.
Tried another identical modem. Again, no change.
What does the verbose log say?
I was told not to use verbose logging, as it can cause problems. If I reset it to use this, how do I check the log? Where do I find it?
I had this happen on my USRobitics 56k awhile back.. I didn't think about it at the time, but I had moved my tower case for one reason or another and it put tension on the connection to the modem which caused the error.. So you might want to check the cable make sure it's slack and clear of any twist or bends..
The connections are positive and not under tension. But I did notice that the modem was sitting on a hot spot on the Mac case... wonder if overheating was causing a problem? The modem was pretty warm... so i've moved it. Hopefully the problem will go away...
Also try power cycling the modem (turn it off then on). It doesn't apply here but for internal modems you need to shut down the computer and restart to do the same thing. Sometimes they'll get stuck in a state that can cause strange results. Reseting them via commands doesn't always fix it.
This is one of the first things that occurred to me. No change.
The problem is intermittent, but it can take 20 or more tries to connect.
OK, I just rang my ISP, as i tried my wife's computer and it gave the same result. I was told it's a fault "and we're working on it"...
