What does the verbose log say?
I was told not to use verbose logging, as it can cause problems.
pffft. Who told you that? Enable the verbose log and leave it on... It is the only way you can view the actual details of a modem connection to diagnose difficulties.
If I reset it to use this, how do I check the log? Where do I find it?
Remote Access (or PPP) control panel.
It's enabled from the Options/Connection pane. View/clear/export it by selecting Activity Log from the RemoteAccess menu.
