Jealousy rears its ugly head again, hey?
[James The Haughty 9600 Owner puts hands on hips, puffs out chest, assumes
pompous-a** "superior"-pose, roars with laughter]
Ah, yes! You poor 7x00 box owners... [shakes head sadly]
>But these are the thoughts I have consoled myself with.
Seriously, though, I empathize strongly with that "consoling" process. I
picked up my 9600 box because, well, it was about all I could afford at the
time. I'm currently kicking myself for not picking up an old G3 instead.
The only trouble is...I had no idea that G3's were (relatively) inexpensive
'til I got educated on the PCI PowerMacs/LEM Swap lists...which I couldn't
have done without the 9600 box in the first place [sigh].
It seems no matter what you buy, there's always something better around the
corner. Computers strike me as being an even worse investment than cars as
far as losing their dollar value so quickly.

Every day I find myself shaking my head in amazement and wonder at what the
people on this list can squeeze out of some of these old boxes. It is
*truly* humbling...

server using _nothing but floppies_:

Um, I think we can all agree that this person is slightly insane for doing
this. However, I was slightly disappointed to learn that he has to use
*two* floppy drives, rather than just the one internal. I'd sell my mother
to the Khmer Rouge to find a web server that could run off of just *one*
floppy! [laughs]

Anyway...
David, you raised some very good points in your reply. I think that asking
anyone to recommend the "best" of anything is tricky because personal
choices are so, well, _personal_. My own vote for the "best" PCI Mac is for
the one that allows you to do what you want/need to do hassle-free and at
the lowest cost.
[The second part is my Scottish ancestry talking, I'm afraid...]
Best,
