But what I'm looking for is a neat PCI toy to play with. I'm not
looking for computing power. We already have a 450 Mhz B&W G3, a 1-
GHz G4 eMac, 500 DV SE iMac, 1 GHz G4 iBook and a Sonnet-powered 800
Mhz G4 Daystar Genesis MP 800+ (the last two being mine and the rest
belonging to the wife & kids).
high-end PCI models that turned out to be lemons ?

Maybe you want a 9700? Using the 8600/9600 case, several ended up on the market (I was offered one on this list), and they are real collector's items... or SHOULD be! Apple didn't proceed with production, as they were developing the G3 at the same time (again, based on the same case), and IT got the nod.

Tell us more about this 9700. I think I saw a batch of these sold on Ebay a year or two ago. But the owner couldn't tell me what ROM it needed or if the ROM was installed or if it needed a module that was included or not, etc. Are these the machines that were in parallel development with the Beige G3 under Gil Amelio, which were killed because the "economy" Beige G3 had better performance (though fewer features)?
