To increase the Finder's preferred memory allocation, you need to first fool the system into thinking the Finder is a normal application. Then make the change, then change the Finder back to being special.
1. Make a copy of the Finder. NEVER ever work on the live file! Do this by option-dragging Finder to your desktop. Make sure you see the copy dialog!
2. Change the copy of Finder to be a normal application.
Any tool that changes file type codes will work fine. ResEdit, File Buddy, etc. Change the Finder's type from "FNDR" to "APPL". Case counts! Gotta be exact!
If you have ResEdit just open the copy of Finder then open up the single Size resource, scroll to the bottom and set the size there.
