Ahhhhhhhh, Norton's! That 'splains it all!
Get thee rid of all that stuff, that's the problem!

Thanks, Joshua & Jane for the input. I've since changed a few extensions. I am missing Thread Manager 2.1.5 extension, must've trashed it, thinking it too old. I got a dialog box saying "File sytem mapping inconsistent", so turned off Norton File Saver 3.5 c/p, in case it was stirring up problems with files (?)

I connected ext. HDD, OS 7.6, which mounts w/no problem, w/no icon freezes. So, orig. Quantum Fireball HDD must be the source of the orig. gliches, but it's currently working with no recur. of freezes, tho' AplSysProfile 'still doesn't know
what SCSI device it is'- even tho' it shows all info for it, including
ID=0.... hmmm.

Will run TechTool, Norton Dr. on Quantum, maybe start Bk.Up, it may be dying. And will check RAM again, and all contacts, connections and HDD termination.

-Are pairs interleaved: A1 & B1, etc., or: A1 & A2, etc.?

If anyone has matched pr.of 32MB, 168 pin DIMMS, FPM or 5-volt EDO, 60/70 ns and/or fresh 3.6 volt PRAM batt's, reasonable *please contact me, off- list*

Thanks!  Jim Kilponen

Hi all - - My 8500 has begun acting up again, I can't seem to solve these:

1) SystemProfile says "the startup device has been chosen, however Apple System Profiler cannot determine which SCSI device it is." Devices&Volumes says ID=0 (Quantum Fireball 1080-S, 1GB, 745MB available). No other HDD.

2) It never boots first try, does on forced boot. It occasionally freezes when I click, then start to drag an icon, on desktop or in folder (s). Sometimes, clicking on icon to open an applic. does nothing, then freezes.

* Would a failing PRAM battery be a cause of either problems, 1) or 2)?

To the best of my limited knowledge, yes, a failed or unstable battery could
be responsible for both.

 *Would unpaired RAM (or a dead stick in a pair) cause a conflict?

Sounds like bad ram to me.
