File date and time stamps are necessary for accurate incremental backups and restores, and for synchronizing the contents of folders or disks, either via a program or by inspection. For me, backups are crucial, because I count on my computer not to lose my work and information, but computers are fallible. The only protection is redundant data (backups). This means making copies. Often I find that I have made several copies of files at different stages of working on them. The date and time provide the quickest method of determining which to keep and which to toss.
If you go online each time you use your Mac, you can use a Network Time Protocol (NTP) client to synchronize your Mac's time with the rest of the Internet [I have forgotten the OS 9 details]. Otherwise, you need a battery. By the way, in over 20 years I have never had a leaky Mac battery, but I have had them die. -- Joshua On 1/5/06 6:23 PM, "Freya" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > >>> I've got a powermac 8500 with no battery and it >> seems >>> to run just fine.
