What type of surface are you using for the optical.  A very shiny
surface can cause problems in operation according to the manual for my
latest one.  I have one each on my desktop and the laptop (laptop built
in pooped out <G>) and neither is jerky.  Both are running on a smooth
wood surface, but not polished.
