But are yours cordless too?

Yes, I've heard that, and also a dark surface is bad for
batteries (if it's cordless).  I have a dark blue pad, but
temp. put a white paper towel over it.  It works a bit better
too but it's still jerky at times.  The jerkiness was not due
to it being optical, since my cordless balled mouse does it
too.
