If not, please detail HOW you created the PDF...

The original ad was created in PageMaker and then exported, probably with Acrobat or within Pagemaker, as an attached PDF. The originator uses a non OS X Mac.

Fine - then they used Acrobat Distiller (some version) to create the PDF.

I then placed the PDF ad into my newsletter. I exported my newsletter as a PDF created from InDesign. The bullets then changed to the Yen symbol.

Did you do a "Save as PDF" from ID, or did you print to Distiller as well?

What version of InDesign? What version of Acrobat (if any) do you have?

I just now opened the original PDF in Mac OS X Preview (bullets were fine), saved the document as a Preview PDF (bullets OK) and then placed it in my newsletter (Indesign).

There is no such thing as a "Preview PDF" - all PDF's are created equal.
