the idea that if you build a product (e.g. a car) different from all the competitors then the customers will buy it is not true either. With cars as well as with cameras it is obvious that there are some trends that all major competitors follow. The design of the *ist D is just right, and being smaller than the competition is more important than you imagine (Pentax has had major successes with small products like the M-series, even though at that time they just followed Olympus' example.). Also, Pentax continues to prove (e.g. with the Optio cameras) that they are able to price their products competitively.
