That's been my experience too. I picked up my Mz-S on my way to an evening
meeting, and didn't get home and open the box till long after the camera
store was closed. I was disappointed that it didn't ship with a set of
batteries and wound up buying some Duracells at the local late-night drug
store. Though they are dated to be fresh till 2010 (yeah, right) I don't
know the quality or storage conditions. They only lasted 16 rolls of film,
though I did play around with the camera and shoot it film-less quite a
bit. I replaced the Duracells with a pair of Sanyos in there but have only
shot half a roll with them, yesterday the battery grip arrived.

I like the grip but it (obviously) makes the camera much bigger and
heavier, which takes away from the "small camera" appeal. I also find that
my right pinky tends to hit the shutter button on the grip, when shooting
in normal mode. The feel is still good, but with it the Mz-S is more of
the dimension of a Pz-1p - still small compared to other brands, though.

It's a trade off, but CR-2's are about $15 a pair retail here (though B&H
sells generic CR-2 for $4 apiece) and I like the idea of getting ~100 rolls
out of a set of AA batteries, so I expect to use the grip.
