  Max, I don't own neither the MZ-S nor the new flash, but here's my
  take.
  I don't think it's a mistake - actually it is the camera that should
  automatically set a lower speed than sync speed no matter if it's in 
  auto or manual. 

  I suspect the reasons are the same why you need a longer speed when
  in contrast control mode:
    - the camera has to distinctly talk to each flash due to the
    serial nature of the comm link. 
    - also the camera should  measure/time each flash discharge
    independently to allow for selective compensation.

  Perhaps this sequential approach together with the corresponding
  computing requires double the sync time (although if the PZ-1p logic
  can do it in 1/125, why MZ-5N needs 1/60 !?)

  Add for MZ-S the pre-flash initial stage where it measures each
  flash by itself to determine how much it contributes to the overall
  lighting, and you get a pretty impressive procedure that may justify
  the additional time expense.
  Eh, just my guess anyway...
