I'm not gonna defend that but obviously it was done in an attempt to keep steering control. A neat trick on a low coefficient of friction surface - trying to keep up with the out-of-control rear tires. Would have worked better if the truck was driven loaded (the vehicle, not the driver!) Ford was the first to provide rear ABS on their line of light trucks (F, E series & Ranger).
