U. S. statistics indicated that the introduction of ABS has increased the rate of single vehicle accidents. It was felt that some drivers were trying to extend their driving abilities by taking full use of ABS, ultimately resulting in an increased accident rate. ABS was introduced as a means to maintain vehicle control in reduced traction situations (a sliding tire has no control - ABS was designed to minimize sliding tires). Unfortunately, initially, the manufacturers did a poor job of explaining this to the general public. It was incorrectly implied that ABS produced shorter stopping distances.
