I recently noticed that Costco no longer carries any of Pentax's P&S
cameras. They used to have two or three, but no more.
But I've been here before on this list when we were all wondering what
was going on with Pentax. They got hot again is what happened.
The big unknown this time is how Hoya actually plans to market,
distribute, sell, and service the brand. Of course we worry that they
secretly are letting it fail from lack of support. And that, or the
economy, or the balance of trade with China vs Japan vs USA, are all
nagging possibilities we will have to keep track of.
I personally don't see this happening, because I rarely ever go into a
camera store for anything. I do B&H and eBay for equipment. Don't have
to hold it to know if I need it, and don't want to tempt myself by
proximity. :-)

Well, I'm saying that the store that I have bought half of my Pentax
equipment at (which is quite a bit) is no longer carrying Pentax.
Essentially, the stores that were carrying Pentax fairly recently are
no longer carrying them. The problem may have existed for a long
time, but these are very recent events.
It was interesting to note, I asked if I could order one, and both
stores said no. So they are not even taking orders anymore.
A friend of mine who works at Keeble & Shuchat down near San Jose
said Pentax doesn't have a local rep anymore Pentax is so difficult
to order from now that K&S is liquidating all their Pentax stuff. I
almost bought the 16-50 from them, but then shit happened and I had
to pass on it.
Frankly, I'm worried about Pentax. They had a great marketing
campaign with those text-heavy Pentaxian ads (in my opinion,
anyway), but that seems to have been abandoned along with their
reps. I don't know what their strategy is now, but as others have
pointed out, Pentax is all but gone from stores these days. Seeing
a Pentax camera in use out in public is just as rare.
Hey Pentax guys? Please get your heads out of your asses and fix
this. I'd really rather not have my brand of choice go out of
business, thanks.
