junk I delete on purpose), rather than putting it elsewhere by using the
archive option. I could do that in Netscape...

You need to drop down the View menu, go to layout and check the "message
pane" line, or hit F8. This then gives you three panes, one folders,
one headers and one the presently viewed message. I use the wide
layout. Highlight the message you want to view and it appears in the
message pane. Use the scroll arrows to move amongst them.
There doesn't appear to be a "reply all" button. You have to drop down
the Message menu or use ctrl+shift+R.
