I have mine set to the three pane wide option. You can drag the edges of each pane to suit, so the folders one takes up about 1/8th of the screen and the headers one is beside it. I fit the message pane into much more than half the remaining screen, which is plenty big enough for me. I prefer not to be constantly opening and closing windows, so flicking through messages with the scroll buttons is quicker and more pleasant for me.
