I got some GREAT shots while I was out there! Unfortunately, they're all
on two dead hard drives -- both RAW and JPEGs! I guess my motherboard
sent voltage spikes to them through the USB as it was going down, and I
don't have the resources to try to recover them. Every shot I ever took
before this past July -- GONE.
Oh man, that's painful just to read!

Backup, folks: 3-2-1 method
3 copies of everything
2 different media
1 copy off-site

Thanks for the info, Mark.

That certainly sounds like a much better plan than I had before it
happened.

The biggest pain in the ass I face in remote storage is that I have a
pretty slow internet connection, so it takes forever to upload RAW
files. They're currently putting fiber optic lines in my area, though --
so maybe that'll be less of an issue before too long.

What I'd recommend is something like the kingwin ezdock
http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=kingwin+ez-dock&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=14881086521540749812&sa=X&ei=J5goT8nTEMHTiALcs6XXAQ&ved=0CFYQ8wIwAw

You can get cables that do about the same thing too. Just drop bare SATA drives in it like old floppy disks. If you have a friend who has critical back up data, just meet once a month and keep your offsite backups at each other's houses.
