I had a similar problem a couple of years ago, but I was able to recover 99% of the raw files simply by keeping local backups. Scanned images are still mostly lost. I'm not worried about off site backups so much, the biggest fear being fire, and then the photographs are the least of my worries.

I got some GREAT shots while I was out there! Unfortunately, they're all
on two dead hard drives -- both RAW and JPEGs! I guess my motherboard
sent voltage spikes to them through the USB as it was going down, and I
don't have the resources to try to recover them. Every shot I ever took
before this past July -- GONE.
Oh man, that's painful just to read!

Backup, folks: 3-2-1 method
3 copies of everything
2 different media
1 copy off-site
