Optics on all Pentax 50mm lenses are pretty much constant in each lens
line. The 1.7 hasn't really changed since 1977 when the original M
version was released. The f1.4 goes back even further, sometime in the
1960's when it was first released in M42 mount as a Super Takumar.
There have been minor improvements but really the M version is mostly as
good optically as the FA version and every one in between. The A is the
most common with full aperture automation. I just like the F version
myself, because it looks a bit odd.

I've stumbled across the A* 50 in past searches and noticed that it
being less expensive than I would have expected. I always figured it
must be due to poor optics. I guess it must be that there are so many
of them around?

Both of those are autofocus. The A* 50mm is a real bargain if you're
a dyi focuser.

I'm inclined to agree with you there, P.J.
I love my manual primes, but I'm still not good enough with them to
focus quickly and get consistent results. I would like to have an
auto-focus prime in my kit for shooting candid portraits and events.

I'm thinking it'll be more cost effective to look for a nice 50mm
f1.7 in F or FA livery.

Hmm. The 50/1.8 sounds like something to start saving pennies for.
Just wonder how many pennies it's going to take.

Don't lose heart! They might want to cut it out, and they'll want to avoid a
lengthily search.
