Bill, If you've got a really good stereo then you where digital will show its problems -- the highs. (The best speakers I ever owned -- Wharfedale W90D -- had to go because Wife said they were too big. But were they ever nice sounding. Now I'm stuck with Polk Monitor 10s. Adequate.)
The best way to get the best digital recording is to get a Philips or similar CD recorder. Then record your LPs at CD rate (instead of the half-speed computer rate). >From there the CD can be ripped to the computer and an audio connection made, or MP3 player connected. Of course, if you can hear the difference, perhaps your money is better spent on a new stylus? I don't listen to music much, but when I do it is on a turntable. Stay thirsty my friend.
