I run the Logitech Squeezebox (currently Logtech Media Server or LMS)
too, I have access to my music library in whatever location I allow
(as Eck can attest), it allows access to your local music library,
itunes db, internet radio including Youtube and Soundcloud amogst many
other sources. It may however be overly complicated though it's
significantly more flexible than a simple wire replacement.

As it's a server/client implementation you need clients at every point
where you would like to access the library, these maybe hardware or
software clients (obviously would need a low power pc or old laptop to
act as client). The nice thing is that all controls can be accessed
via several smartphone apps allowing full control of playlist, volume
and source selection. The server and software clients are free to
download and use.
