I called CRIS and talked to customer service and then a "tech". Tech didn't seem to want to acknowledge his awareness of such a problem. He first suggested it could be the battery. Told him it had been freshly charged, but understood that it could be a "bad" battery. His next suggestion was to clean the camera and lens contacts. I got no acknowledgment of there being a mirror motor problem. Actually I only heard crickets upon mentioning it. After a few seconds of dead air, I thanked him and hung up. I've noted which battery was in the camera today. Both are Pentax and bought at the same time...but.(?) Thanks, Paul for the lead.

That's how it started, and removing the battery was my temporary fix as well. If it is that, it may progressively get worse. CRIS said they could fix it, but due to a parts shortage, they ended up sending me a new camera instead.
