I imagine, from my repetitious history, most could guess what lens I was using. The DA 55~300 screw drive that stays pretty much stays attached ready for it's next visit to the local Cal State Wildlife Area. Tech's suggestion was to clean the lens contacts. I did so, noting only a faint gray shade on a isopropyl alcohol damp white cloth. I've noted which battery was in use when the lock-up last happened to maybe identify a guilty battery. I feel as you do, the CRIS response is to be that of wonder and dismay.
Thanks, much Christine. I'll dig out my service invoice from CRIS today, but I think it did ref a mirror motor problem... My camera was experiencing more than the freeze-up, though. It would start with a freeze, and then go on to perform continuous, random mirror flops all on its own. I think the problem first surfaced on a somewhat depleted battery, sometimes putting in a fresh one would solve the problem temporarily, but it always returned. Eventually, it didn't matter what battery was in there, it was like a mirror mechanism possessed. The crickets don't really surprise me, either. I remember when I spoke with them about the issue -- which is pretty well documented out there on the interwebs ("pentax mirror flop" should do it in google), I got a similar response. But when I sent it in for repair, they sure knew what the problem was, fixed it fast & spelled it out on the invoice... I'm pretty sure the cs folks are instructed to give as little away as possible. Paul's k-5 went in for service after mine, by which time they had run out of repair parts? And so they sent a new camera instead? They know about the problem. What lens are you using, Jack? My 16-50 is starting to give a "frozen" response, ie: won't take a pic when pressing the shutter... but I that appears to be an AF problem. The dreaded SDM failure, perhaps? Sigh. It's always something. (... and sometimes it's just a k-7...) :) -c On Mon, Jan 28, 2013 at 10:22 PM, Paul Stenquist <[email protected]> wrote: > I'm surprised.
