I had a series of job interviews with a well-known coffee chain, which shall remain nameless, but it's an anagram of Stuck Bras, and each one started with a coffee ritual. They drew fresh water, boiled it and let it cool for one minute. They poured it over the heaped scoop of grounds in a French press, then left it for precisely 4 minutes before pouring it. It was excellent - unlike the bilge water they serve in their stores.

That's how I make my french press coffee, although I usually give it five minutes. It is on the robust side.

I'd never heard of a 'French Press' so I Googled it to find out what this wondrous, exotic machine looked like.

I found it's what I use to make coffee every day.

In Australia we just call them 'plungers'

By the way - thanks for all the suggestions on my original post. They've been a great help - I think....
