I've heard this several times, but find it to be totally nonsensical. What I remember people telling me with 35mm was that for portraits people tend to use lenses in the 75-100mm range. So, with 35mm the 77 is at the wide end of that range, and on APS it's on the long end of the range. My home studio is a bit cramped for width, so the narrow field of view does a great job of including less background, making it easier to keep clutter out of the frame. I own a ridiculous number of 50mm lenses, and almost never use them for single person portraits. I'll use them for group portraits, but in my studio, the 50mm length just doesn't work well. But, what people seem to totally miss is that a lot of the magic of the 77 has nothing to do with the focal length. It just has some wonderful quality (I've been told it's microcontrast) that just looks wonderful. It's worth using even when it isn't quite the right focal length. -- Larry Colen [email protected] http://red4est.com/lrc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List [email protected] http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
