Bruce, Thanks so much for the info on the fill flash question. As I said, I'm a beginner really and I appreciated all the help from the members. A couple more basic questions:
Reading the manual that came with the flash unit and in the Auto section, it seems to indicate the Auto function is only for use with cameras that are not TTL Auto flash compatible. My 645NII is compatible but I'm assuming that it's still OK to use the Auto function anyway. The manual also says "When the camera's exposure mode is set to Programmed AE or Shutter Priority AE, the aperture value set on the flash will be automatically set on the camera." Does this mean that I would have to use Aperture priority or Manual modes only? If I'm correct about using aperture priority then my next question deals with setting the aperture on the flash. Pat White responded that as a general rule "full power in bright sunshine, down a stop on cloudy days." I know it's a basic question but does "down a stop" refer to a wider or narrower aperture? Again, thanks to you and all the members who responded to my first query on PUG. Beyond that, meter and set the camera for proper exposure. Then set the flash to A mode (automatic - no ttl) and then set the f Stop (press the select button in center of dial, then spin the dial) to be x number of stops higher or lower than the camera. When you fire, the sensor in the flash will read the light and quench when appropriate. If you use TTL you will not be able to control the flash power. The advantage to the leaf shutter lens is that you can use most any shutter speed. The technique is still the same.
