Arrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!! (primal scream).

Help !

Seems that my Protel 99 SE has decided to go south for the winter on me, and
lock me out of all (or most) of my own files.

As a background, let me fill in a few odd facts which may actually have
something to do with the problem.

1.) I haven't accessed this copy of Protel 99 SE, which is on my Laptop, for
just over a year (8/05), and although I can access the file that I did on
that date (which was just a mechanical drawing), I cannot access a major
group of files from 5/05, which was the last major work I did on that
computer using Protel, nor can I access a new file from the same source as
the older files. Actually, it appears that the mecanical drawing that I did
is just about the only thing I can open.

2.) I have replaced the motherboard in the laptop, as the old motherboard
had bad simm memory connector, and a bad usb connector, although I have kept
the same processor, hard drive, and eithernet adapter card.

3.) I have installed Skype on the laptop.

4.) Most of the older .ddb files I have are set to read only, which notifies
me and prompts me to continue when I try to open them.

The platform is PIII running Windows 2000 Ver. 5 (Build 2195 Service Pack
4). the system was running great the last time I used it, and I have not
done any upgrades to the operating system since then, except for upgrading
Internet Explorer fromVer 5.5 to version 6 (which may in fact have done a
few things to Windows 2000 itself).

With that said, here is the problem: I start Protel 99 SE by double clicking
on the icon on the desktop, and Protel 99 SE opens with no database or
files.

I click on the files menu and either select an existing file or a new one. I
should state that the first time I tried to open a file, it was a new file
on another computer over the network, and that was the first time I saw this
problem.

Anyway, Protel (or Windows?) responds by putting up an error dialog that
states the following:

Client99se.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.
You will need to restart the program.

An error log is being created.

                                                      OK (button)

Things just suspend (with an hourglass) for about a minute and a half, and
then Protel just evaporates, but the error message stays there until you
click the OK button, and then it too evaporates.

It appears that no error messages are in fact generated, but there is a
small file that appears in each directory which has a database that I try to
open and fail to open, and the time/date stamp correlates with the crash.

That file name begins with whatever the name of the database (.ddb) file is,
and adds a ".ldb" filetype to it. Using either Windows Explorer or Power
Desk 4.0, under FileType it states that the type of file is
"Access.LockFile.9". The file is 64 bytes long, and contains only the name
of the database and spaces followed by "Admin." and more spaces.

It appears that Protel is locking me out of the files, but that does not
necessarily explain what is happening, since it shouldn't be crashing if
that is the case, but I would just expect an error message from Protel.

Anyone out there have any explanitions?

I thought about just reinstalling Protel, but that may not fix the apparent
lockouts.

Thanks

JaMi
