Pat Cox, new President of the European Parliament

Irishman Patrick Cox has been elected President of the European Parliament by 298 votes in the third round of voting in Strasburg to find a successor to Nicole Fontaine. Cox, 49, is a member of the Group of the European Liberal, Democrat and Reform Party (ELDR) and will be President of the European chamber in the second half of the parliamentary term, up until June 2004.

His Royal Highness the Prince of Asturias and Prince Philippe of Brabant, the Crown Prince of Belgium, have opened the exhibition of medieval enamels "From Limoges to Silos" organised by the State Enterprise for External Cultural Activities (SEACEX)

Europe and Asia meet to discuss environmental policies for the first time

A total of 25 European and Asian countries are meeting to discuss environmental policies for the first time at the summit known as ASEM. Spanish Environment Minister Jaume Matas is heading the European delegation to the meeting, which is taking place from 15 to 17 January in Beijing, China.

Aznar urges efforts in the fight against terrorism and encourages further economic reform

Addressing the European Parliament in Strasburg, Spanish Prime Minister Jos� Mar�a Aznar has reported that the entry into circulation of the euro "is going absolutely brilliantly".

Mr Aznar announced that one of the focuses of the Presidency will be the creation of an area of greater economic and social prosperity; the Presidency will be pushing for reforms in five specific areas: transport and communications, energy, financial markets, employment and education.
