It's nice to have a clear-cut answer - thanks!

If I do plan to virtualise, should I be running the host OS as my main
desktop, or should I run all my desktop apps in a virtual machine
keeping the host as slim as possible? (And if the latter, does that make
change the answer to the initial question above?)

Presumably, the virtual machines will be limited in terms of graphics
etc, so if I want Beryl or anything else 3D to work I would guess I need
those to run in the host OS, but I've never tried stuff like Xen so I
don't really know how they work in practice.
