I think a source install is currently best, as apparently later versions (0.8.x) are best but not yet released. In particular stuff like YouTube is supposed to work. I haven't tried gnash yet, but will give it a go when I get chance. However I'll probably go for binary packages for the time being (which for Ubuntu means v7.2). As for Java I'm surprised that isn't fully supported!
