I wouldn't blame the shipper until I saw the way it was packaged. I once received a hand crank sewing machine with the wooden domed case badly damaged. It was packed in a flimsy corrugated box, that had probably been reused several times, with a few sheets of crumpled newspaper inside. When I complained to the seller, a supposedly knowledgeable antique dealer, there response was " It's insured, file a claim." Needles to say I didn't bother. It was not an expensive item and no shipper would honor a claim with such flimsy packaging. If you're really concerned about packaging on an item, send the seller instructions. Don't get too pompous when you do this. Just explain that you have had some problems in the past and want to be sure you receive the piece in good condition and offer to pay extra for professional packaging if necessary.
