I am floored. It takes a lot to get me on the verge of nausea from just a
picture, but that second one nearly did me in. Unbelievable.

It's not even the money. It's the destruction of something at once material
and historical, something that will never be created again in all of time.
How saddening. You folks know M. Gunrem, a collector in France who's done
some stunningly beautiful phono calenders sold through eBay for some years
now? He must've overestimated the USPS handling when he shipped a 20" Pathe
I won in an eBay auction of his. It arrived in a package without "FRAGILE"
written all over it, and the disc was of course snapped neatly in half. I
didn't care about the money, though it was a goodly sum lost. I didn't care
about filing an insurance claim, an available option. I only cared that
this snapshot of a moment in history had existed just fine for the better
part of a century, and then I got involved with it and it was destroyed.
That took months to get over. I think I stopped eBaying completely for
about 4 months after that happened. (Supergluing it back together was
helpful therapy in the healing journey though.)

John, we mourn your loss and share your pain, brother! I hope whomever gets
held accountable for this senseless destruction gains an idea of exactly
what's been lost. And I write these words with tongue only partly in cheek.

Best to all,
Robert
