UPS has automated sorting equipment that will attempt to eat or crush
things, I had a triumph horn that was very well packed and this happened.
Normally the person who ships must initiate the claim and is paid as they
purchased the insurance, this was done and it took me about six months to
get the shipper reimbursed, then they sent me a check, which in my case
covered shipping for the triumph and the horn so essentially I got free
shipping and a damaged horn. I prefer Fed Ex or USPS as they have done
better for me over the years. I got to know the damage claim lady farily
well over the phone and UPS never examined the package and let me keep the
horn so I was satisfied. She explained the automated system problem and
acknowledged that most drivers do not care. It was packed by Mail Boxes Etc
who sent me the check after UPS paid them, and the insurance was $300, the
shipping cost was $275.

UPS is sneaky, when I had Toyota anti-freeze mailed that they damaged, they
transferred it to another container, and just sent it to me. I called up
the seller and asked them why they sent the antifreeze in a different
container as it got my other items wet, it was then we figured out what UPS
did and UPS did pay the seller so I got all new items. At least they paid
me in both cases.
