Much of this does appear to stem from the dislike of his politics. I don't find his politics germane. Inability to work with people of differing political views is no recipe for success (just look where that lack has gotten the USA in the past couple decades).\
I am reasonably sure the only place that "his politics" came up was in the Reddit thread, where the group moderator spent a lot of time insisting that calling Paul to task is all about revenge for being anti-CoC. That's a red herring, a fictitious one, and I would appreciate it if you would not drag that nonsense in here. Repeating a lie doesn't make it true.
There are plenty of people I work with in FIG, in my job, and in Drupal with whom I disagree considerably on political or social views, and we still manage to work together comfortably and professionally. There are even current and former FIG members that I get along with just fine because we mutually agree to avoid certain topics of conversation. :-) I've never felt spoken down to by any of them on this list.
At this point, hopes are slim any good will come of this, because it's going to require a lot of big egos to swallow their pride and politics, and actually try to work together in a respectful, compassionate, cooperative fashion.
"work together in a respectful, compassionate, cooperative fashion" is what those who have filed complaints feel Paul has failed at in the first place.
