Hi PT, Did you receive your M.E.N. test results, yet? I am also testing for M.E.N., I also have hypercalcemia (elevated calcium.) Have they checked your other endocrine glands (adrenals, ovaries, pancreas, etc.) for masses? I have an unexplained adrenal mass and ovarian tumor, as well as the pit tumor. Since M.E.N. is highly genetic and I have no known family history, my diagnosis has been hard to make. My neuro-endo said that he would diagnose me with it if I had any known family history of it. I recently found out that a great Aunt who passed away many years ago had diabetes, parathyroid disease (she had them removed,) and reproductive problems caused by excess gonads. It sounds very similar to M.E.N., but she was never diagnosed. The genetic testing is rarely used, so you were very blessed to have it done. My neuro-endo is just keeping an eye on things-eventually, I will probably have to have multiple surgeries. My calcium is climbing, so I may check into parathyroid surgery after the pit tumor surgery. I watched a very interesting live internet radioguided parathyroid surgery the other day and learned a lot about parathyroid disease and treatment. I also got to ask the surgeon several questions that were answered live after he performed the surgery. You can view the surgery here: "On June 14, 2005 at 4pm EDT, James Norman, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.C.E, Endocrine Surgeon at Tampa General Hospital in Tampa, Florida, will perform live a minimally invasive radioguided parathyroid surgery also known as MIRP. This new procedure is for the treatment of parathyroid tumors." As he says, high calcium is never normal-most likely caused by a parathyroid tumor or very rare diseases. I am banking on a parathyroid tumor. I have been diagnosed with osteopenia and vitamin D deficiency, as well. Have they checked your bone density? Dr Gagel of MDA researches M.E.N., I plan to consult him after I get the pit tumor taken care of. He is the only M.E.N. expert that I know of. Take care. You're in my prayers. Meri |
