Hi Meri,

Yale is behind in their testing so I still do not have the results back for the MEN-1 testing. The genetic counselor told me to call back in 2 weeks to remind her if iIdo not hear before then. I went to the pituitary endocrinologist: My elevated calcium level is now back to normal but I have other signs of difficulty. Unfortunately, everything could also be attributed to other things. I have osteopenia which could also be attributed to my rheumatoid arthritis. I have lots of little kidney stones which also could be attributed to my wierd kidneys (medullary cell? sponge? kidney - I think I was just made wrong). They are testing for Vitamen D and PTH continues to be elevated. I think they are assuming there is a parathyroid adenoma. I got a couple of different versions of what happens if there is a tumor. Version 1: If I have MEN-1 they will take a wait and see position as the tumors tend to regrow after surgery and it is currently not causing major problems. Version 2 (I think this is if I was having more symptoms): Neck resection rather than laporoscopy so that all of the parathyroid glands can be checked and removed as needed. Since I am not having severe problems at this time I'm going for the wait and see approach. My nonpituitary endocrinologist thinks that a scan might be indicated as it's alsways possible that I have developed a single parathyoid adenoma not related to MEN-1. I'll keep you updated. By the way Kaiser is paying for the MEN-1 testing.
