Sure - I've no argument with the idea of optimising the path here, but
the approach still strikes me as odd.  Surely the overhead of loading
translated messages once into constants instead is miniscule, balanced
against the non-standard use of messaging APIs?

 (ultimately, risking translators not getting all of the translatable
messages, and our error messages being incomprehensible for non-english
speakers?)

If you've already talked to the l10n folks, and they're fine with the
approach, then I'm happy to stand corrected.
