I'd feel more comfortable if Quicktime (by which I assume you 
mean the Sorensen codec, since h.264 should be playable using 
other means) were verifiably implemented rather than just 
claimed to be.  But I have to admit that the advent of flash 
video, as terrible as it is, has made it a lot easier to watch 
videos under Linux.

I'll echo other people and ask what exactly makes win32-codecs 
more problematic than, say, the Nvidia driver or the Flash 
plugin.

I think the time to get rid of win32-codecs would be when people 
stop downloading it.  It'll be a happy day when people can play 
these formats using just free software, but I'm really not 
confident that day is here.
