So what is the license of theses codecs ?
Who own the copytright on the file ?

strings return nothing, and I am pretty sure they are far from being all made
by microsoft, as they usually place enough information in their files.

And once you have found the license of every files, please show me the part
that say "this can be reditributed free of charge".

Plf is not about warez distribution, afaik.

It is already the case, I have some file that cannot be read by mplayer
because the codecs is missing and not in win32-codecs.
For exemple, files made by me when I was younger, using intel indeo codecs
that were installed on my win95 computer.
So I guess that there is some files that still cannot be played, and that no
one really know what codecs are used.

Given the fact that website like http://www.free-codecs.com show 200 video
codecs, and 100 audio codecs, I guess that we have some of them missing as we
have ~ 60 files in win32-codecs.
Yet, no one ask for them.

I have posted to get meaningful and real life numbers, and I fail to see
how "I would not be able to read some random file" is relevant.
