The class should've checked for "Path" all along since that points to the Palm directory in my Registry as well. I made the wrong assumption that "DesktopPath" was the requisite entry. If you run an earlier version of Palm Desktop then you won't have this key. Just fixed this. That said, HotSync support has only been tested with 4.0.4. In retrospect it turns out that this has been bugging quite a lot of people. (In my defense I can say I had the flu and that I haven't actually used my handheld for more than a week.)
