Junix, I don't blame you if you look at it as FUD, since from cursory look, it looks like FUD! But looking deeper at Orly's message not just the bits of sentence and paragraphs. As you can see, he's referring to Desktop Linux rather than the Server type. That is where the issue is. Because of this, I looked at it as constructive criticism. If Orly only put the word "Desktop" it would not be so bad a message... :) Have mentioned this last year, the Linux server market is a done sealed deal for Linux. Traditionally, Linux thrives so well on the server market because the manufacturers, OS Distro and the applications, meaning the whole shebang supports Linux all the way. The desktop is a totally different matter. The Desktop market is harder to crack, and I see only Ubuntu trying to fix it. Coupled with razor thin income from different consumer manufacturers, they sometimes give half bake driver support in Linux or non at all. Hopefully with the introduction of the sub notebooks with Linux, it will spur more development and drivers in the Desktop Linux area. On my case, I do the yearly traditional thing where I evaluate Linux Desktop, and everytime, Windows or OSX, sorry. My time of recompiling kernel and applications are long gone(except at work and vmware/virtualbox guest additions!). I would rather spend my time on Family or Hobby. This has been discussed on and off again for a couple of years now here in PLUG. There are even flame wars on it! -- regards, Andre | http://www.varon.ca _________________________________________________ Philippine Linux Users' Group (PLUG) Mailing List http://lists.linux.org.ph/mailman/listinfo/plug Searchable Archives: http://archives.free.net.ph
