12,000. Been using that magic number for a long time. AFAIK, the file
system can handle that many, but rm/ls and other userland utilities
might have difficulty handling it. I know in Linux, specifically rm,
will complain of too many files.

As Orly mentioned, ZFS + Solaris/OpenSolaris is a good combination.
userland utilities and the file system can cope with that amount with
ease.
