I agree, this is one area which Windoze is not likely to address.  
When something goes wrong. It's easier to fix things in Linux because 
it gives you access to the internals. GUIfied administration tools 
tend to slow you down.

I already mentioned Cygwin.  Also, NT has had a (largely unused) POSIX 
layer for quite a while already.

are you sure about this? you mean you have to reinstall XP if you change 
your motherboard? I thought plug and play solved this a long time ago.
Anyway, that kind of sux... but not majorly so.
