In fact, the "proprietary format" are those files which store state
information so that access would be quicker.  Other than that, it's simply
a maildir format.

Yes.  But you have to have a separate message/user-password store for the
two (LDAP or MySQL).  Postfix can route mail to cyrus via the
'alternate-transport'
